The Himalayan Database was originally published as a CD-Rom booklet in 2004 by the American Alpine Club and distributed by the Mountaineers Books from Seattle, Washington. 1000 copies were printed. Back in 2004, releasing it as a CD-Rom was the optimal method. The price was set at $69.95 to recover the costs of manufacturing and distribution. The original booklets of the Himalayan Database are now sold out.
In 2017, a new non-profit organization (The Himalayan Database) was established to continue the work of Elizabeth Hawley who retired in 2016. As a result, version 2 of the Himalayan Database has now been released to the general public at no charge via Internet download.
The new version uses Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9. Changes were also made to the internal data structure to eliminate unused and irrelevant data fields and add new fields. The new version is incompatible with the previous edition (Version 1.x) that used Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6. Owners of the previous version will need to download and upgrade to the new version in order to gain access to future updates and changes.

A special version of the Himalayan Database that supports SQL (Structured Query Language) allows for more complex multi-table searches to be done. This feature is generally beyond the capabilities of most users and requires a background in computer science or advanced data processing to be useful. See
